Baptism

Water Baptism: A Step of Obedience

Water baptism is an outward expression of what Christ has done spiritually in you. Baptism is a wonderful expression that you are not ashamed of Jesus.

Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32 NKJV).

Why be baptized?

Jesus commanded it.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19 NKJV).

Baptism demonstrates obedience.

  • Jesus is the example.

It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan” (Mark 1:9 NKJV).

  • Followers of Jesus obeyed His command.

Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them” (Acts 2:41 NKJV).

Baptism represents a picture of breaking from the past and beginning a new life with Christ.

Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4 NKJV).

How should I be baptized?

By immersion.

This means covered over, submerging. The New Testament identifies certain essential elements. New Testament believers were publicly baptized before other followers of Christ.

  • Water

So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him” (Acts 8:38 NKJV).

  • Going down into the water (Acts 8:38)
  • Being “buried” in and raised from the water (Romans 6:4; Colossians2:12)
  • Coming out of the water

And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove” (Mark 1:10 NKJV).

When should I be baptized?

As soon as possible.

New Testament followers of Jesus were baptized immediately after trusting Jesus as their personal Savior (Acts 2:41; 8:36; 16:14-15, 33). See below to for information on how to schedule this important life changing event.

Other questions you may have.

I already have been baptized as an adult.

If you have recently trusted Christ for salvation then you need to be baptized. Baptism comes after sincerely and consciously trusting Jesus as your Savior.

My baptism was not by immersion.

Upon discovering the reasons for scriptural baptism, you should desire to be immersed, just as Jesus & His followers were.

I was baptized as an infant.

Infant baptism reflects the best loving intentions of a family, but the child is not old enough to have any decision, acceptance, or trust in the matter. The Bible tells us baptism always came aftersomeone had consciously and purposefully made a personal decision to accept and trust Jesus as Savior and Lord.

When can I be baptized?

Here at Eagle Ridge Church, we offer water baptisms several times each year. They are usually done during the 11:10 worship service. Ahead of time, those who want to be baptized will meet with a Pastor for a short class on the meaning of baptism and what to expect when being baptized.
